The much anticipated K90 million FDH Bank League Cup, whose winners will go home with K25m as prize money, kicks off May 29 with regional leagues’ preliminaries.
The competition, that was unveiled in November 2019, was due to have been played in 2020 but had been put on hold due to suspension of sporting activities in the midst of the CoVID-19 pandemic.
At a press briefing on Tuesday at Mpira Village, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary, Alfred Gunda confirmed the format of the Cup to be participated by 16 Super League teams, 62 regional leagues’ Premier Division teams (20 from South, 24 from Centre and 18 from North) and and 62 from the regional associations.
“We lost a lot of opportunities. May be it wasn’t just our day.”
Substitute, Misheck Botomani scores a late goal for Mighty Wanderers to secure a vital point against Red Lions in a game which was dictated by lots of drama on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium.
The two teams were equal in measure and strength as there were no goals in the first-half and both sides missed scoring opportunities with Wanderers being the main culprit when Isaac Kaliati missed a sitter with a beckoning yawning goal in front of him.
Manoma and Red Lions battling it out.
Kaliati managed to beat the Red Lions keeper, only to shoot over the crossbar to the disbelief of the spectators who kept on discussing his miss for the entire game.

I have noted with sadness how as the country we choose how to implement the Covid 19 measures to the benefit of those in power and politicians in general.
Just last week Madam you categorically turned down the Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers request to have half the stadium with supporters saying that you can only allow 250 supporters in the stadium.
The same week the Vice President was having meetings in the North which defeated the measures of Covid 19. Similarly this has continued in the South and now the President is joining the fray.
Ironically, when it suits the political agenda, you and your task force tend to look the other side. A very good example is how recent by-elections were held. In this regard, madam I urge you to stop the hypocrisy in the implementation of Covid 19 measures.

“…..Referees hit back with damning allegations.”
Mighty Wanderers FC has brought in some allegations of corruption to do with the premature end of the much-anticipated Blantyre derby against their age-old archrivals, Nyasa Big Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.
In a statement, the Nomads are asking Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to decisively act on centre referee Gift Chiko and first assistant referee Bernadetta Kwimbira, saying their “dubious and suspect decisions are ruining the beautiful game in this country”.
Law and order: Police on pitch
“The officiating crew of yesterday should not be found anywhere near football,” says the Nomads chairperson in the statement. “I hope very much that FAM and SULOM will look at the TV recording of the match to form a view about the acceptability of the two’s performance and their suitability to referee future matches.
