Religious college sues HUD to protect single-sex dorms and showers

A complaint to HUD and a finding of the school to be in violation would threaten “heavy fines, punitive damages and attorney fees,” according to the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative group that is representing the school in federal court in Missouri. The College of the Ozarks and its associated K-12 magnet school is located in Point Lookout, Missouri, and has a college enrollment of roughly 1,500 undergraduates. “The government cannot and should not force schools to open girls dorms to males based on its politically motivated and inappropriate redefinition of ‘sex,’” ADF senior counsel Julie Marie Blake said. “Women shouldn’t be forced to share private spaces including showers and dorm rooms with males, and religious schools shouldn’t be punished simply because of their beliefs about marriage and biological sex.”

Success: The LGBTQ Community is Protected from Housing Discrimination

Goal: Applaud federal government for expanding anti-discrimination laws to protect the LGBTQ community. The LGBTQ community is now protected from discrimination in housing. For decades, LGBTQ individuals and couples could be denied housing with no legal recourse to turn to. The Biden Administration has since expanded anti-discrimination rules to protect them from this cruelty. Unfortunately, discrimination has been commonplace across housing in the United States, as this ForceChange petition outlines. Under an executive order, President Joe Biden made good on a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that changed the legal definition of “sex discrimination” in employment to include the LGBTQ community. Under this expansion, the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Fair Housing Act also protects the LGBTQ community from being denied housing.
