In an address at a virtual meeting of the regional grouping, he also mentioned that the BIMSTEC convention on cooperation in combating international terrorism, transnational organised crime and illicit drug trafficking has come into force last month.

Five of these seven countries- India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh are from South Asia while the remaining two, Thailand and Myanmar, are from Southeast Asia. Addressing the meeting virtually, Jaishankar said the collaboration in intra-regional tourism has been badly hit by the ongoing coronavirus disease pandemic (Covid-19) adding that as the overall situation becomes normal, strong emphasis should be laid on developing the BIMSTEC’s brand of tourism and also focus on developing modalities for using the initiative’s tourism fund.

Next year will be the silver jubilee of the establishment of the BIMSTEC.
