The second COVID-19 wave has brought the virus back into long-term care and retirement homes, as well as educational institutions, including elementary schools. It has had an effect on all of the five public health units that are part of northeastern Ontario. Algoma Public Health has had two institutional outbreaks in January. One was Great Northern Retirement Home and the other was Extendicare Maple View. Currently, the health unit has announced that an individual has tested positive at RM Moore Public School in Sault Ste. Marie. The announcement was made on Jan. 18. On the very same day Algoma Public Health announced the region’s first COVID-19 related death. There have been no other confirmed cases related to the school and the other outbreaks are reporting as resolved.
