Taiwan s government on Monday delayed imposing further water curbs that would have impacted major chip-making hubs after heavy rainfall began replenishing reservoirs on the drought-struck island.
Sub-tropical Taiwan is dealing with its worst drought in history after no typhoons directly hit the island last year, meaning much less rain.
Taiwan had planned on tightening curbs on the use of water from June 1 in the important chip making hubs of Hsinchu and Taichung, requiring companies in the two science parks to cut water consumption by 17%.
But after heavy rainfall over the weekend that is expected to last all week, heralding the start of what Taiwan calls the plum rain season, the government has postponed those plans, Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua said in a statement.

Taipei, May 31 (CNA) Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) on Monday asked the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) to provide regular updates on applications by private interests to donate COVID-19 vaccines from abroad as case numbers continue to rise in Taiwan.
Su also asked the Food and Drug Administration to speed up its screening of those applications and verify the sources of the vaccines being offered, according to Cabinet spokesman Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成).
The premier gave these instructions during a meeting with Cabinet officials early Monday to examine Taiwan s current COVID-19 control measures, Lo said.
Water wars are no longer from apocalyptic imagery. Something as dramatic is already happening in Taiwan, where a drought is causing chip manufacturers to compete with locals for water use.
