SolarWinds attacker Nobelium targets over 150 companies in new mass email campaign

Thinkstock The Russian hacking group behind the supply chain attack that poisoned software updates for the SolarWinds Orion platform has been perfecting its email-based attacks over the past few months to plant backdoors inside organizations. These efforts recently escalated with an attack launched from a hijacked email marketing account belonging to USAID and targeted around 3,000 people across over 150 organizations in 24 countries. The hacking group, known in the security industry as APT29, Cozy Bear, The Dukes and Nobelium, has been tied to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) by the US and UK governments. It has a long history of targeting governmental or government-tied organizations, sometimes using zero-day exploits to gain initial access. In this latest email campaign observed by Microsoft, around a quarter of Nobelium s targets were organizations involved in international development, humanitarian, and human rights work.

Mail servers of some firms compromised

Some Bangladeshi organisations running Microsoft Exchange mail servers have been compromised by cyberattacks, says the e-Government Computer Incident Response Team (BGD e-GOV CIRT) in an advisory. It named a few business groups that have already been compromised and asked others to check their systems. The advisory mentioned the name of HAFNIUM, a Chinese hacker group, which has carried out such attacks across the globe. The BGD e-GOV CIRT has asked a number of state-owned and private organisations to carry out scans of their mail servers to see if any malware had been injected into their system and to believe that they have been compromised if such malware was found.

Microsoft Patches Four Zero-Day Flaws in Exchange

Get Permission Microsoft issued emergency software patches on Tuesday for four zero-day vulnerabilities in its Exchange email server, one of the most widely used pieces of enterprise infrastructure. The company says it believes the flaws have been exploited by a China-based group it calls Hafnium, which is seeking to gain persistent access to email systems. Microsoft typically issues patches for Windows and other products on the second Tuesday of every month, but it makes exceptions for security vulnerabilities that are deemed particularly dangerous. Although Microsoft describes the attacks as limited and targeted, there are already indications that many other hacking groups are mounting attacks hoping to catch slow-patching organizations off guard. The flaws appear to have been exploited since at least early January.
