TRIBUTES have flooded in for a Greenock finance expert who headed up one of the country s top investment firms. James (Jim) Galbraith, who was born and grew up in the town, rose through the ranks to become Scottish Friendly s chief executive. He died suddenly last month at the age of 58, leaving family, friends and colleagues devastated. Much-respected Jim had guided the financial institution through the Covid-19 pandemic. In over 30 years with Scottish Friendly he helped transform the company into the largest mutual insurer in Scotland, with £5.3 billion worth of investments. Former Greenock Academy pupil Jim is remembered by loved ones as kind, gentle and incredibly bright, a man who could make people cry with laughter, while also generating huge respect and love from his 200-strong workforce.

SHAREHOLDERS in Edinburgh-based Nucleus Financial have overwhelmingly accepted a £145 million takeover offer for the firm. Salisbury-based retirement planning firm James Hay said investors holding 91.73% of the shares in the Scottish financial technology business had accepted its recommended cash offer of 188p a share. The offer now becomes ‘unconditional to acceptances’ – meaning the company has agreed to sell to the bidder. “I’m very pleased that shareholders have overwhelmingly accepted our offer,” said Richard Rowney, the chief executive of James Hay. “Shareholder approval is a key milestone in the journey to bring together the respective expertise of Nucleus and James Hay.”
