UNL alumnus hopes to grow solo bass act into diverse Midwest emo band

About a year and a half ago, Efren Cortez took center stage at Couch House, opening for Hail Varsity and worlds greatest dad. He introduced himself and his black electric bass he named Toothless, joking that the crowd is about to witness a two-piece act. He matched his bass guitar with his black Vans, shorts and graphic tee. It’s then that the onlookers realized Cortez was on stage alone with nothing but an empty drum kit behind him. He brushed his pale green hair out of his face and began to strum low notes out of Toothless’ four strings. Cortez accompanied Toothless with his vocals, creating a solo act he calls No Functional Purpose.

ASCAP Music Cafe cued into virtual Sundance Film Festival

Instead of crowding into the Rich Haines Gallery space at 751 Main St. to see singer-songwriters including Allison Russel, Devon Gilfillian, Pedrito Martinez and bands such as Time for Three, Sundance Film Festival account holders will be able to see them perform online by visiting village.festival.sundance.org, said Loretta Muñoz, assistant vice president, membership of American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The virtual performances will be posted in the Sundance Film Festival Village page starting Jan. 29, and new content will be posted at 3 p.m. every day until Feb. 1. Festival-goers can create their accounts by visiting festival.sundance.org/create-account, Muñoz said.

As the Sundance Film Festival moves online this year because of the pandemic, ASCAP’s Music Cafe a popular feature at the Park City, Utah, fest for 22 years will move its event virtual as well. The 23rd annual showcase, which will feature new performances as well as select archival appearances, will take place on the online Sundance Film Festival Village from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1. The lineup features Airborne Toxic Event’s Mikel Jollett, Yerba Buena’s Pedrito Martinez, country singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters, indie folk quartet Darlingside, soul singer-songwriter Devon Gilfillian, and founding member of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago Allison Russell.
