Green gas HGVs are key to net zero - new report

Gas-powered lorry in Dublin. Gas-powered heavy good vehicles (HGVs), powered initially by biomethane and then hydrogen, are key to decarbonising the commercial transport industry, according to an international report launched on Monday. The report, entitled ‘Future role of gas in transport’, was supported by Gas Networks Ireland and looked at decarbonisation options for the commercial transport sector. These included the production, distribution and use of electricity, biomethane, bio-substitute natural gas (bio-SNG) and hydrogen to understand the role of each fuel and the timeline for scaling up of their use. In Ireland, transport remains one of the most difficult areas to decarbonise.

Hydrogen as energy supply is tested by Gas Networks Ireland | Pipeline Technology Journal

Flag of Ireland (copyright by Shutterstock/Niyazz) Ireland, like several countries in Europe including Britain, Holland and Germany faces the prospect of declining natural gas production and the need to introduce a zero-carbon energy solution by 2050. The country’s state-owned gas producer and distributor, Gas Networks Ireland is pioneering efforts to replace natural gas with green hydrogen. Currently, two thirds of Ireland’s natural gas come from the 260MMscf/d (million standard cubic feet per day) of gas Corrib field, off the North West Coast. Current estimates suggest that Ireland’s gas production will run out sometime during the middle of the decade. Ireland’s domestic gas production currently meets the needs of local power stations. If nothing is done, imports of natural gas would rise leading to an increase in domestic power prices.

Gas Networks Ireland refused permission for development at Father Burke Road

Galway Bay FM 9 April 2021 print Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gas Networks Ireland has failed to secure approval for a significant development at Father Burke Road in the city. An Bord Pleanála has refused permission for a district regulation installation base at Father Burke Park. The project had secured approval from city planners in September last year, but was later subject to a third party appeal. The development consisted of a solid concrete blockwork enclosure with a pitched roof and concrete base galvanised steel vent stack, and associated facilities. In refusing the proposal, the board noted its location in a public park adjoining a public path and road, as well as proximity to residential properties.

Petronas subsidiary said to have awarded contract for Ireland decommissioning project

KUALA LUMPUR (April 2): Petroliam Nasional Bhd s (Petronas) subsidiary PSE Kinsale Energy Ltd is said to have awarded a multi-year contract to Hydra Well Intervention AS to support PSE Kinsale Energy’s major decommissioning project in Ireland. Hydra Well said in a statement on its website yesterday that PSE Kinsale Energy operates Ireland’s first gas fields off the Country Cork coast, with the field in production from 1978 until 2020.  Hydra Well, which did not specify the value of the contract, said the fields were Ireland s only indigenous source of natural gas until 2015 . We will implement our Perforate, Wash and Cement (PWC®) system, designed for specialist wellbore applications, on approximately 15 wells across PSE Kinsale Energy’s Celtic Sea assets as part of the two-year campaign. Our PWC® system provides a revolutionary solution to replace traditional plug and abandonment (P&A) and downhole tooling techniques.
