Mayor Mridula Jaiswal at inauguration of the toilet for transgenders
VARANASI: The first toilet for transgenders in the state has come up in Varanasi. The toilet, constructed by Varanasi Municipal Corporation in Kamaksha area, was inaugurated by mayor Mridula Jaiswal on Wednesday.
Municipal commissioner Gaurang Rathi announced that four more toilets for transgenders will be built in the city by June-end.
In 2014, the Supreme Court had ordered that separate toilets should be constructed for transgenders but only few have been constructed so far in cities like Mysuru, Bhopal and Nagpur.
“When the Supreme Court had declared transgenders as the third gender in its order in 2014, some groups and sports personalities had shown interest in building toilets for transgenders in the city. Finally, in 2019 the VMC decided to construct it on the demand of transgenders in the city,” said Rathi.
