Ready to plan your next family adventure but unsure where to go? Try these seven state parks on for size. Each site was recommended to us by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for being especially kid-friendly: On this short but smart list, you’ll find giant slides, splash pads, nature centers, baby-friendly beaches, and even a waterfall you can swim in. Just pack some snacks, make sure you have a Recreation Passport, and hit the road.
Want more options? You can always use the Michigan DNR’s Recreation Search site, which allows users to narrow search results by using filters for amenities like playgrounds, beaches and bike rentals.
Welcome to the height of migratory bird season, a fleeting time when, if youâre observant, you may spy a bright golden warbler in a tree or bush.
Mid-May is the heavy traveling season for such songbirds. Several species wear an array of yellow, brown, gray and black feathers â among other palettes â with equally colorful names, including Cape May warbler, Nashville warbler, chestnut-sided warbler and magnolia warbler. Not to forget songs and calls as varied as an orchestraâs instruments.
We enjoy this often-hidden spectacle for just a few weeks until theyâve all rushed northward to their summer breeding grounds.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning a couple of volunteer stewardship days at state parks next month. It says volunteers will remove garlic mustard plants from Warren Dunes State Park on Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No experience is necessary, and everyone is advised they’ll be working off trail. Those who attend are told to wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. Also, bring along work gloves. Due to COVID, registration will be required to take part and social distancing guidelines will be followed. The next stewardship day will be at Saugatuck Dunes State Park on Sunday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They’ll also remove invasive garlic mustard. Same rules apply. To sign up, email LeslieE1@Michigan.gov or call 517-242-8760.
