Fireworks Can Trigger Crisis For Vets With PTSD

St. Cloud Fireworks Committee Facebook (KNSI) – Fourth of July Fireworks are a joy for many every year, but it can be unnerving for some who served the nation and cause mental anguish. Health experts say for combat veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a traditional fireworks display can increase agitation and isolation. St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Medical Center Veterans justice outreach coordinator at the St. Cloud Michael Mynczywor says someone with PTSD can be affected for days afterward. “They already rev high with the anxiety, so when fireworks go off, it can increase that. And then, for the typical person, when the booms would stop, your anxiety would go down. But when it comes to PTSD, they can rev at high levels for long periods, sometimes even days.”

St Cloud VA Medical Center Quickly Vaccinating Veterans and Staff Against COVID-19

Nataliya Vaitkevich from Pexels (KNSI) – As more mass vaccination clinics start to pop up around the state, the St. Cloud VA Medical Center is ahead of the game. Public Affairs Officer Barry Venable tells KNSI’s Bob Hughes their drive-through flu shot clinics built the model for COVID-19 vaccinations as supplies ramp up. “As we set today, we have received in total 13,000 doses of vaccine, and we have given out 12,556 doses. So the model we’ve built that that grew out of that influenza effort last fall, has proven productive, and frankly, quite valuable.” Those remaining doses will be used as second doses for those that need to receive them this week.

St Cloud V A Has Vaccinated More Than 9,000 [PODCAST]

St. Cloud V.A. Director of Pharmacy J.D. Anderson and St. Cloud V.A. Public Affairs Officer Barry Venable joined me on WJON today for our Voices for Veteran segment.  Anderson says the St. Cloud V.A. has vaccinated more than 9,000 people with the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine and that number includes health care workers and nearly 7,000 veterans.  Anderson says they are still vaccinating veterans who are 75+ but expect to start vaccinating the next group which extends to 65+ next week.  Listen to our coverage below.   The St. Cloud V.A. will notify veterans with a letter when they are eligible to get a Covid-19 vaccine and urge veterans to check their website and facebook page for updates on the vaccination rollout process.  Anderson says approximately 66 percent of those offered the vaccine have taken it.  He says some still plan to get the vaccine but turned down in the first offer.  Anderson is happy with how the process has worked.  He says the V.A. is getting their vaccines
