A monthslong concrete paving project has begun in Washington County closing portions of some roads north of Brighton and Coppock.
The Washington County Engineer’s Office announces that beginning this week 300th Street about a half mile west from Kiwi Avenue, Kiwi Avenue from 300th to 290th streets, and 290th Street between Highway 1 and Kiwi Avenue are closed for an approximate $1.6 million project contracted by Jones Contracting Corp. of West Point. The project is expected to take about 1.5 months to complete, weather permitting. Any questions may be directed to the engineer’s office at 319-653-7731.

The investigation continues into the deaths of two people struck by a Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department truck Thursday evening.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Chris Chesar said William A. Reed, 72, and Karolyn B. Reed, 72, were walking on the road from the scene of a trailer fire at 1177 County Road 9, Marietta, when the fire pumper/tanker backed into them.
Reno Volunteer Fire Chief Dan Ritchey said there would be no comment about the fire or fatalities.
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Engineer’s Office, Washington County EMS, Washington County Coroner, Marietta Fire Department, Reno Volunteer Fire Department, Devola Volunteer Fire Department, Fearing Volunteer Fire Department, and Lowell Adams Volunteer Fire Department.

MARIETTA – Two people were killed Thursday night at a fire scene near Reno where a fire truck struck two pedestrians, the Marietta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The accident happened on County Nine Road where a truck from the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department was at a structure fire at 1177 County Nine Road, the patrol said in a release late Thursday night.
William A. Reed, 72, and Karolyn B. Reed, 72, were struck by Williamstown Pumper/Tanker 8 as it was backing at the scene, the patrol said. Both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased by the Washington County Coroner, the patrol said.

¯ Marietta signal/fiber optic upgrades: A traffic signal and fiber optic system project is scheduled to begin on March 29 at various intersections in Marietta, including Putnam, Front, Third, Seventh, Greene, Pike, and Acme streets.
According to ODOT, periodic short-term daily lane closures will be in place. The estimated completion date is projected for June 30.
¯ The Cornerville Bridge, located in Marietta Township on County Road 20, Sandhill Road, will be closed by the Washington County Engineers Office on Monday for approximately five months for a bridge replacement.
