A heavy metal guitarist from Columbus, Indiana who was armed with bear mace and wore a tactical vest as he joined a mob storming the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6 has pleaded guilty in federal court. Jon Schaffer, 52, a guitarist in the band Iced Earth, admitted in Washington DC District Court to obstructing an official proceeding and entering a restricted building with a weapon when he tried to forcibly stop Congress certification of the U.S. presidential election results. These actions are disgraceful and unacceptable, FBI Deputy Director Paul M. Abbate said in a statement. Abbate added that law enforcement will continue to aggressively investigate, pursue and hold accountable those who committed acts of violence or otherwise violated the rule of law that day.
