Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer pleads guilty in storming US Capitol

A heavy metal guitarist from Columbus, Indiana who was armed with bear mace and wore a tactical vest as he joined a mob storming the U.S. Capitol building Jan. 6 has pleaded guilty in federal court.  Jon Schaffer, 52, admitted in Washington DC District Court to obstructing an official proceeding and entering a restricted building with a weapon when he tried to forcibly stop Congress certification of the U.S. presidential election results. These actions are disgraceful and unacceptable, FBI Deputy Director Paul M. Abbate said in a prepared statement from the United States Department of Justice. Abbate added that law enforcement will continue to aggressively investigate, pursue and hold accountable those who committed acts of violence or otherwise violated the rule of law that day.

In a court document filed Monday seeking the continued detention of Kenneth Harrelson , one of a dozen members of the Oath Keepers charged in a sweeping conspiracy case against the group, prosecutors cited newly discovered communications allegedly showing members discussing storing their weapons at a Comfort Inn in Arlington, Virginia, knowing that possessing such arms within Washington, D.C., would be illegal.
