PHOENIX - It s hiring season for school districts across Arizona and they re looking to hire new teachers for the next school year.
Arizona was already facing a teacher shortage before COVID-19 and we re taking a closer look at the challenges of hiring new teachers in the midst of a pandemic.
Washington Elementary School District just wrapped up its week-long virtual job fair. District officials say hiring is very competitive as the pool of qualified teachers has shrunk over the years and applicants are getting offers from several different districts.

The state of education is still in flux as students and teachers navigate so many unknowns.
Right now districts and charters are focused on enrolling students for the fall and those numbers will be critical in helping schools rebound.
It s not how most families envision learning about kindergarten, a drive-thru event with car-side conversations. It s very interesting, it s different, said Julia Hunt, whose daughter is entering kindergarten in the fall. It s a little challenging, this helps out a lot, being able to get some information straight from the teachers and the principals and everything, said Ryan Goins, whose son is entering kindergarten.

PHOENIX A folding table overflowed with Barbies, playdough, all the trucks a kid could want, and a line of cars flowed into the street. With holiday music blasting and their ugly sweaters on, Maryland Elementary School s teachers and administrators kicked off the last day of the semester with a drive-thru toy drive.
Each student, from kindergarten through third grade, was allowed to pick out one present from the comfort of their car and say hi to Santa, also known as Principal Nick Gupton.

PHOENIX As if the pandemic weren’t disruptive enough, many American schools are facing a growing shortage of teachers.
School districts are recruiting parents as substitute teachers, online class sizes are soaring to 50 children or more and bus drivers are baby-sitting classrooms. Some are considering allowing asymptomatic teachers who were exposed to Covid-19 to continue to show up.
Public-school employment in November was down 8.7% from February, and at its lowest level since 2000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That includes teachers who quit, retired early or took leaves of absence due to the pandemic, and layoffs of support staff such as teachers’ aides and clerical workers. The staffing crunch leaves teachers educating children in person and online simultaneously, deep-cleaning their own classrooms and taking turns as crossing guards.
