Whatcom sees two deaths and 74 new COVID cases Thursday, but rates appear to level off

Feb. 5 Two more Whatcom County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 have died and the number of confirmed cases in the county climbed by 74, the Washington State Department of Health s dashboard reported on Thursday, Feb. 4.
Overall, Whatcom County has seen 5,809 confirmed cases and 68 related deaths during the pandemic, according to state data as of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, meaning 1.2% of all COVID cases in Whatcom County have been linked to a death.
Forty-seven additional probable cases an increase of three from Wednesday s report have been reported in Whatcom County during the pandemic, resulting from positive antigen tests not confirmed by a molecular test.

Washington residents scramble for second doses of COVID-19 vaccine
Washington State Department of Health says it’s working to ensure everyone gets their second dose of the vaccine. But KING 5 has learned, many people are running into problems getting that booster shot.
This week, according to the Department of Health, Washington received 107,000 first doses, and only 59,000 second doses. That number is about 15,000 less than providers requested.

It almost seems greedy to want to choose your coronavirus vaccination site. At this point in the rollout, just getting a vaccine
anywhere should be considered an accomplishment. More than 600 providers requested 358,000-plus first doses of shots for this week, per the Washington State Department of Health. Yet our first-dose allocation from the federal government was less than a third of that numberâ107,125.
In King County, a local arena has gotten in on the distribution act. Accesso Showare Center in Kent became a vaccination site earlier this week (as did the Auburn General Services Administration Complex). And popup clinics at Amazon s headquarters in South Lake Union have also brought injections out of the realm of gurneys and smocks.

At 71 years old, Lisa Soli was delighted to snag a coveted COVID-19 vaccine during a clinic last month at Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue. But when the retired educator asked about her second dose, the nurse told her they weren’t scheduling boosters and wished her luck finding one.
Soli has been searching ever since.
“You just have to get lucky, and it shouldn’t be that way,” she said. “This is critical life-and-death stuff for those of us over 65.”
