Supply Side: Bentley, Octopi Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor
Savage has selected Octopi’s terminal operating system for a new intermodal terminal at Union Pacific’s rail yard in Pocatello, Idaho. Its teams will place loaded containers onto railcars that will be transported to the Northwest Seaport Alliance ports in Tacoma and Seattle, Wash.
Infrastructure engineering software firm Bentley Systems, Inc., has acquired Montreal-based INRO Software; Savage has selected a terminal operating system from Octopi, part of Navis and Cargotec Corp., for a new intermodal terminal at Union Pacific’s rail yard in Pocatello, Idaho.

Last year, when Washington’s east-west passenger rail study came out, the results were mostly uninspiring for a full corridor initially, but one particular section on demand in the Kittitas and Yakima Valleys stood out to me:

In short, local transit demand exists in communities along where rail lines run that are not currently served sufficiently by local transit options. The current Amtrak Cascades program cannot address unmet needs like these, but perhaps a slightly different program might help. To this problem, I pose the following idea: Cascades Local Rail.
Spokane drivers frustrated by backups amid launch of I-90 ramp meters. Here’s why
Washington State Trooper Jeff Sevigney confirms the three crashes Thursday night involved vehicles already on the freeway and none were near any ramp meters. Author: Amanda Roley Updated: 8:23 PM PDT April 16, 2021
SPOKANE, Wash. Three separate collisions through Spokane s Interstate 90 corridor caused a major back up during the evening commute on Thursday. Some blame the new ramp meters for the traffic. The Washington State Department of Transportation said that s not the case. No, the ramp meters did not cause nor contribute to that condition that was created from the collision, WSDOT traffic engineer Glenn Wagemann said.
Bentley Systems Announces Acquisition of Mobility Simulation Leader INRO
Thursday, April 15, 2021 10:40AM IST (5:10AM GMT)
To Extend Mobility Digital Twins for Dynamic Multimodal Simulation
Bentley Systems, Incorporated (Nasdaq: BSY), the
infrastructure engineering software company, today announced the acquisition of INRO Software, a global leader in multimodal transportation planning, traffic simulation, and mobility visualization software. The acquisition expands Bentley’s capabilities in the important growth area of mobility digital twins, just as countries including the U.S. are poised to make a generational investment in infrastructure, and as transportation systems must evolve faster to accommodate both urbanization and carbon reduction goals, and the transition to electric and autonomous vehicles.
WSDOT to tackle I-5 where expansion joints failed Wednesday

Drivers on I-5 got a good look at the state of repairs on the freeway in downtown Seattle on Wednesday. Emergency expansion joint work shut down two southbound lanes of the freeway near the West Seattle Bridge for several hours.
That spot is right where the Washington State Department of Transportation plans to address the failing concrete and expansion joints over the next 18 months.
“Revive I-5” is back.
Construction is set to begin in May on southbound I-5 from the I-90 interchange to Spokane Street. Five expansion joints will be replaced on I-5, and one expansion joint will be replaced on westbound I-90 over I-5. Additionally, more than a mile of concrete will be repaired.
