A train carrying crude oil derailed and caught fire in Whatcom County Tuesday morning, prompting officials to evacuate all nearby residents and businesses for several hours.
Reports that the train had derailed came in around 11:46 a.m., according to the Whatcom County Sheriff s Office, in the 7500 block of Portal Way in Custer, Wash., roughly 15 miles north of Bellingham along I-5.

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. Federal investigators are assisting local authorities in investigating what caused a tanker train hauling crude oil to derail in Whatcom County Tuesday morning. There have been no reported injuries.
Cleanup continued Wednesday as crews work to clear the train cars, debris, and crude oil that leaked from the cars. Officials said it could take months to get the area fully cleaned up.

This work will require overnight weeknight lane closures, Monday through Thursday, on both southbound I-5 and State Route 167 in Tacoma that start Monday, Jan. 4. Several ramps and exits also are affected. Signed detours will be in place.

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. Fire crews say a home near Spangle is a total loss after a fire sparked there on Monday morning.
The home was located off of Highway 195 near Paradise Road, which is about five miles south of Spokane, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Roads were closed in the area while crews battled the fire, but they have since reopened.
Officials told KREM s Nicole Hernandez that a woman was in the home when the fire began at 3:20 a.m. on Monday but she was able to safely escape. She is in a hotel and receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
