Supportive workplaces boost women s creativity, improve performance - UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff

Snehal Hora, doctoral student School of Management Studies have long shown that, on average, women lag behind men in creative performance, despite having the same skills and abilities. Now, as companies race to innovate, new research from the School of Management uncovers why this occurs and what organizations can do to level the playing field. “Creativity is crucial for success in business today,” says Snehal Hora, a doctoral researcher and lead author on the study, which appeared online this month ahead of publication in the Journal of Organizational Behavior. “Creative thinking is how we develop novel solutions, grow companies and move the world forward. When organizations do not tap the full creative potential of every employee, they are at a competitive disadvantage and hurt the bottom line.”

The college debate league that won t shut up - The Georgetown Voice

Waiting for a decision with my partner after an intense round is a rush. Debaters bustle around crowded hallways, squeezing past each other to find their team as we pore over all the arguments we did or could have made. We make our predictions, trying to guess the outcome of the round based on the facial expression of our judge when we made an argument. After finally hearing the decision, we run back to our teams, telling them how we just won a round that we had no business winning or scream about the “worst” decision that we had ever heard. But now, we both wait alone. The moment my face drains of its color, freezing on the outside but burning underneath my skin, or the moment that I am so relieved and elated, used to be moments I could share with my best friends. Now, I stare at a screen in a hollow room to go it alone.

World s most explosive volcano holds lots of water

A new study of Shiveluch, the most explosive volcano in the world, could help scientists understand more about the global water cycle and volcanic plumbing systems. Shiveluch volcano, located in Kamchatka, a remote peninsula in northeastern Russia just across the Bering Sea from Alaska, has had more than 40 violent eruptions over the last 10,000 years. The last gigantic blast occurred in 1964, creating a new crater and covering an area of nearly 100 square kilometers (38.6 square miles) with pyroclastic flows. But Shiveluch is actually currently erupting, as it has been for over 20 years. So why would anyone risk venturing too close? Michael Krawczynski, assistant professor of earth and planetary sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and graduate student Andrea Goltz, brave the harsh conditions on Kamchatka because understanding what makes Shiveluch tick could help scientists gain insight into what’s going on with other volcanoes.
