Barrow s business from BAE to Vickers-Armstrong yard - in pictures

Over the decades, in its many forms, the yard has supplied for generations of highly-skilled Barrovians. The work done by those in the factory in the mid 20th century was the start of the huge industry the town enjoys today. For more than 100 years the Royal Navy have purchased the ships crafted by Barrow’s skilled workers. Today, BAE is the driving force for that industry. Many a proud Barrovian has dedicated their life to the shipyard, from the days of Vickers-Armstrong, Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering to the current BAE Systems. The work has continued to this very day and has been described as ‘the backbone for the town’s economy’ by MP Simon Fell.

The visit of the Princess of Wales to Barrow s dockyard in 1993

TWO significant historical events occurred in Barrow during the year of 1993. The crews, service men and workers of Barrow s shipyard were not only witnesses to the commissioning of Britain s first Trident submarine, but also attended the Royal Visit by Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. The Princess, who was responsible for naming the sub HMS Vanguard, was welcomed as the guest of honour in a ceremony held at Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering in Barrow in August. During the Royal visit she was given a tour of the submarine and the surrounding docks. She met with crew members and workers. Princess Diana also enjoyed a special lunch to mark the occasion that was held at the marquee next to Devonshire Dock Hall.
