As some Roman or other famously observed, those whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. It would thus appear that the gods have it in for the residents of Newtown, since, not content with putting us under “lockdown” – a punitive treatment formerly meted out primarily to rioting prisoners – they have sent a band of boy-racers to plague us while we’re confined to our cells. I’m mindful that one should not perpetuate harmful sexist stereotypes, and so when I say “boy-racers”, I ought to add that roughly half of those one sees in Newtown appear to be female.
