STEWARDS’ ACTIONS AGAIN IN FOCUS

Up to 12 witnesses will be called when an
independent inquiry begins tomorrow into the
conduct of stewards involved in the abandoned
Richard Laming race-day treatment case.
Racing Integrity Commissioner Sean Carroll will conduct a closed hearing into the behaviour of
stewards Mark Stevens and
Melbourne Cup day in 2019, when the pair observed alleged illegal
race-day treatment at the
Laming stables at Cranbourne.
The Carroll inquiry will also explore the conduct of the stewards during the abandoned Laming hearing before the
Victorian Racing Tribunal in February this year.

Torquay-based trainer Bryce Stanaway alleged he was being harassed when he initially refused to take part in a Victorian Racing Tribunal directions hearing on Wednesday into charges laid against him. Can you fellows stop harassing me, Stanaway asked when contacted by phone by the VRT to begin the 9:30am directions hearing, before informing the hearing, chaired by Judge John Bowman, that he had been advised by his lawyer in New Zealand not to take part.
His phone connection ended soon after but Stanaway was called again a few minutes later for clarification as to his pleas on the charges, where he said: Why are you trying to pressure me into doing this? he asked the VRT registrar.

Racing Australia has moved to tighten-up betting rules concerning jockeys in the wake of a failed conviction last year for a jockey allegedly betting on overseas races.
In recent days, Racing Australia announced amendments to Australian Racing Rule 115, which covers the law on jockeys betting. The rule has been in force since March, 2019 when it was written into the rules with the intention of closing some of the loopholes initially covered by AR 83.
But the new rule had a loophole itself which the legal team of jockey Ben Melham used to clear one of seven original betting charges as it dealt with alleged bets on races in Singapore.
