Service to country, medicine, helping children and improving international relations.
These are just some of the career paths Granville High School Class of 2021 members envision for themselves as they prepare for graduation and the next steps in their lives.
They also recently reflected upon some of the challenges they’ve encountered and overcome on their way to completing their educations within the Granville Schools system.
Williams to study psychology
Carys Williams next stop will be at Wittenberg University, where she plans to study psychology.
Williams applied to a number of Ohio institutions, was accepted to all of them, but Wittenberg won her heart. “My mom is a Lutheran pastor, and they used to host a lot of gatherings for pastors there. That’s what first got it on my radar. I like the campus and it s close enough to home that I’m happy with it. They just blew me away with how welcoming they were.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff has filled one of his two assistant coaching positions by announcing the hiring of Wesley Brooks.
Brooks comes to Columbus after a four-year stint with Michigan, where he helped guide the Wolverines to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and coached five All-Big Ten performers at the guard and wing positions.
“I am so excited to join Ohio State Women’s Basketball program,” said Brooks. “I believe Kevin McGuff is one of the best coaches in the country and the opportunity to learn from him and is exciting. Year after year, Kevin has Ohio State at the top of the Big Ten Conference and competing championships. In addition, I truly believe the state of Ohio is one of the deepest and richest states in the country when it comes to women’s basketball and I am excited to continue building relationships and keeping that talent at home.”
ANDY GRAFF
NIAGARA, Wis. Niagara native Andy Graff is drawing attention while making his mark as a first-time novelist.
Graff, son of Kevin and Nina Graff, serves on the faculty, is an English department faculty member at Wittenberg University in Ohio.
He recently had his debut novel “Raft of Stars” published, which has drawn critical acclaim from nearly all corners of the literary world.
In getting to where he is today, Graff took a round-about path to becoming an author. After graduating from Niagara High School in 2000, he joined the Air Force just before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
He served a term in Afghanistan as an aircraft mechanic. After his discharge, Graff went to a technical school with plans to become a paramedic. However, fate entered the picture and he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a writer.
EUP students receive Principals Award
The winners of the 2021 Eastern Upper Peninsula Principals’ Awards have been announced.
In order to be eligible for this award, students need to have a 3.3 grade point average or higher, a 24 on the ACT or a 1180 on the SAT and be a graduate of an Eastern Upper Peninsula high school. These students are recognized at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.
In previous years, students needed to achieve an SAT score of 1200 in addition to the other requirements in order to receive this award.
Local students include those from Brimley, Cedarville, Ojibwe Charter School, Rudyard, Pickford, St. Ignace, Engadine, Newberry, Whitefish, Mackinac Island and the Sault.
