2021 - Faculty donates R1 million to Gift of the Givers Foundation

17 July 2021 - Faculty Communications Researchers from the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences and Wits Health Consortium recently pledged R1m to the Gift of the Givers in support of their aid efforts. The Gift of the Givers Foundation is the largest non-governmental disaster response organisation on the African continent. Their purpose is to unite people with a common vision, by serving mankind for the greater good. This purpose transcends race, religion, colour, class, political affiliation and geographic location. Since its inception in 1992, the Gift of the Givers Foundation has been responsible for the delivery of life-saving goods and on-the-ground support for innumerable people across South Africa and the globe.

Top researchers urge a leap of faith in AstraZeneca vac

Professor Shabir Madhi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Witwatersrand University and principal researcher of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the country, is calling on South Africa to use the consignment on vaccines that were found last month on delivery to have an April expiry date to offset the slow inflow of the currently-used Johnson & Johnson vaccine. He is backed by Professor Francois Venter, deputy executive director of the Wits Reproductive Health Institute and HIV/Aids research and treatment veteran, who asks, “Why are we sending away 1,5 million [AstraZeneca] vaccines, and on what basis – the bottom line is we could have vaccinated one million vulnerable people? All the rest is just nonsense. There are enough vulnerable people to have rolled this out urgently.”
