Small business ombudsman Bruce Billson is calling on the federal government to require financial institutions to explain why they withdraw or deny insurance and banking services to small businesses.
In a submission to an inquiry into the prudential regulation of investment in Australia’s export industries, Billson said many small businesses are “unable to obtain insurance or banking services based on industry, location and other factors”.
The inquiry was established on February 17 to examine opportunities for the nation’s export industries, and how changing practices across banking, insurance and superannuation institutions are challenging businesses.

A CALL is ringing out from the Whitsundays for the government to âmove mountainsâ like it has during COVID-19 to take action that will help rehabilitate the Great Barrier Reef from its current critical diagnosis.
Whitsunday Conservation Council committee member Tony Fontes said he was shocked but not surprised to learn about the critical diagnosis.
He hopes it will instil some âoomphâ in leaders who have the power to take action on climate change.
Mr Fontes said Cyclone Debbie had changed the face of the reef and while the Whitsundays had been spared the severe bleaching seen in other areas, it was not bouncing back from other challenges as expected.
