Puget Sound Energy IRP dramatically increases DERs but sets conflict over gas

Dive Brief: Puget Sound Energy s new long-term resource plan is failing to live up to the promise of Washington state s ambitious clean energy legislation by leaving the door open for more carbon dioxide-emitting resources, according to environmental advocates and Washington residents. The debate over PSE s draft integrated resource plan (IRP), seen at a Feb. 26 meeting held by Washington regulators, is the latest example of a conflict over the degree to which natural gas will be needed to back up renewable energy, and whether or not using alternative forms of natural gas like biogas alleviates emissions concerns. The IRP serves as a launching pad for how PSE, the state s largest utility, will implement Washington s 2019 Clean Energy Transformation Act (CETA), which requires utilities to transition toward carbon neutrality by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2045. PSE and other Washington utilities must file their first CETA implementation plans by Oct. 1, and the plan must be consis

The debate over EV charging at interstate rest stops

First published on An Eisenhower-era regulation forbidding commercial activity at interstate rest stops has found itself in a new age, one where truckers want an end to rest stop shutdowns and environmentalists want easily accessible electric charging along the highways as the green movement accelerates. The federal government has regulated interstate highway rest stops since 1956, and they cannot have fueling stations or restaurants, with some exceptions. But Congress introduced legislation in the form of H.R. 2 The Moving Forward Act that would permit electric vehicle charging at rest areas. It passed the House in 2020, and it could later be tucked into President Joe Biden s $2 trillion plan for infrastructure and climate.

Grid Edge M&A Alert: Sentient Acquires Varentec for Dynamic Grid Control

The trend for Silicon Valley startups applying advanced technologies to solve utility grid problems is clear: Go big or stay home.  After a decade of eking out a niche in the world of advanced distribution grid power controls, Silicon Valley startup Varentec has sold its key assets for an undisclosed sum. The buyer is Sentient Energy, another Silicon Valley power-line-sensor startup that was acquired last year by Koch Engineered Solutions, an arm of industrial conglomerate Koch Industries.  Varentec’s technology for sensing and altering voltages on low-voltage circuits will be folded into Sentient’s sensor and software suite, with the aim of creating a “comprehensive solutions provider for today’s increasingly complex distribution grid management needs,” Sentient CEO Bob Karschnia said in a Tuesday statement.
