Winnipeg Richardson International Airport continued to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing government restrictions on travel according to fourth-quarter figures released Friday by the Winnipeg Airports Authority.
There was a further drop in passenger traffic in the last quarter of 2020 compared to both the fourth quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of last year. Passenger traffic dropped 86.6% compared to the same period in 2019 and 27% compared to the previous quarter.
WINNIPEG Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions, the Winnipeg airport saw a notable drop in passenger traffic in 2020. On Friday, the Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) released its results for the fourth quarter of 2020, which showed a drop in passengers compared to both the fourth quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2020. According to the WAA, passenger traffic dipped 86.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2019, and 27 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2020. As for its fourth-quarter revenue, the WAA said its unaudited consolidated revenue was $14.4 million, which is down from $33.9 million in the same period the year before.

The federal government announced this week anyone booked on a flight to Canada starting Jan. 7 will need all three before boarding. Key to the new requirements is travellers aged five and up must provide a negative PCR test result performed within 72 hours of flight departure time.
WINNIPEG The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is looking into the idea of providing rapid COVID-19 screening. As of now, travellers coming to Winnipeg from most parts of Eastern Canada, as well as outside the country, have to self-isolate for 14 days. However, according to the WAA, the risk associated with travel is “incredibly low.” It noted that it’s working with its partners to determine how to support safe travel and further stop the spread of COVID-19, adding that rapid screening is a possibility. “Rapid screening is proving to be an effective tool in this area, and we are working with the government, private industry and researchers to explore opportunities for Winnipeg Richardson International Airport,” the WAA said in a statement.
