Readers letters: Shining a light on pigs horror

By Readers Letters © Supplied by Animal Equality UK The image of the sow looking out from a metal crate in Saturday’s Evening Express was horrific. Pigs are intelligent creatures. They should be outside with their piglets rooting around and being allowed to perform their natural behaviours. The “farmers” arguing for crates say they are to prevent the sow crushing her piglets and the metal slats are to make cleaning easier. The bottom line is they are only interested in making as much money as they can with the minimal outlay. If you enjoy eating pork products but also love animals please consider buying free-range or outdoor- bred products. These products are more expensive but the welfare of the animals is much higher.

Ms Gillan, born in Inverness and best known for her roles in Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji, said she was “horrified” to read the story. Mr Sleigh’s farm, P&G Sleigh Pig Unit at Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire, was recently the subject of an undercover investigation by Animal Equality UK. Ms Gillan took to Twitter to tell her 1.2 million followers that she was “horrified” to learn of the alleged abuse at P&G Sleigh Unit.

A top Scottish pig farmer is being investigated after shocking footage emerged showing injured animals being hammered to death. Breaches of animal welfare rules are being investigated at the P&G Sleigh Pig Unit at Oldmeldrum. Philip Sleigh was, until last month, chairman of Quality Meat Scotland’s pig standard-setting committee. Animal Equality UK carried out an undercover investigation at the farm, and captured graphic footage of pigs suffering severe injuries and, in some instances, being hammered to death or bludgeoned against a concrete floor.
