THE Heidelberg, Boksburg, Alberton and Brakpan SPCAs put down thousands of day-old chicks which had sustained severe life-threatening injuries following an accident in the North West.
The NSPCA’s Farm Animal Protection Unit was alerted to an overturned truck on the N3 South near Heidelberg, transporting 41 500 day old chicks from a hatchery in the North West to a broiler farm in the Free State.
Three trucks, a bakkie and another vehicle were involved in the crash.
“Inspectors from the NSPCA were immediately dispatched to assess the situation and it was discovered that thousands of chicks were drenched in diesel which had spilled onto the chicks as the truck was lying on its roof,” said the NSPCA.

The Albemarle County Police Department Animal Protection Unit received a call for service regarding concerns for the welfare of a feral cat near the Tavern on the James restaurant in Scottsville on Tuesday.
The reports included that the cat may have been injured by hot water.
On Wednesday, the Animal Protection Unit was able to successfully trap and transport the cat to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA for evaluation. The CASPCA determined that while the cat did have minor injuries, including a cut above the eye socket, there were no external burns.
