NJ college student makes chess set of toilet paper bishops, mask pawns

Morristown Daily Record Nicholas Montesano s first college semester wasn t what he expected. Toilet paper shortages and limited human interactions amid a pandemic did not make for an ideal freshman year at William Paterson University. The Roxbury Township native remembers the empty shelves during grocery store runs to stock his dorm room with Clorox bottles, hand sanitizer and any roll of toilet paper he could find. That experience and hustle to find items inspired him to design and build a chess set that represents 2020 and the pandemic.   The essentials like masks, gloves, toilet paper, it was on a shortage all year, said Montesano, 18, an art studio major with a concentration in industrial and product design. It couldn’t be more fitting than to design a chess set showing what we are going through now.
