Robert L. Bernd, 97, of Williamsburg, VA died on May 9, 2021. He was born in New Richmond, WI on July 9, 1923. He served in the Navy in WWII from 1942 through 1946, eventually as a line officer on the navy aircraft carrier Point Cruz in the Pacific. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1947 with a B.S. Degree and received management training from the General Electric Company, Medical Division where he began his working career. His work experiences were varied and included building and managing a manufacturing plant in Charlottesville, VA. He later served as Corporate director of industrial Relations and Services at Premark International Food Equipment Group. During his career he served on the adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia and later the adjunct faculty Edison State College of Ohio.

Donald Clyde ‘Don’ Stringer WILLIAMSBURG Donald Clyde “Don” Stringer, 84, died Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at his home. He was a retired journalist who served as managing editor of the Daily News in Bowling Green, Kentucky, for many years. He also was an adjunct professor at Western Kentucky University in the School of Journalism. He previously worked at the Atlanta Times and the Nashville Banner newspapers. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity and was active in state newspaper associations. Don was born in Bay Springs, Mississippi, and grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He completed a B.S. degree at the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the First Cavalry Division in Korea in field artillery and wrote for the Stars and Stripes while in the military. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

Carolyn Sheppe Alliss, 89, played violin with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra

WILLIAMSBURG Carolyn Sheppe Alliss, 89, went to be with her Lord Monday, March 1, 2021. She was born to the late Rev. Doctor Edwin S. Sheppe and Mary Smith Sheppe and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Adli A. Alliss. For 54 years, she and her husband lived in Norfolk, where they raised their five children before moving to Williamsburg in 2008. Carolyn graduated with a B.A. Degree in Music from Mary Washington University and had a career playing violin with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. She was a life member of the Scherzo Music Club and musically active at McKendree United Methodist Church in Norfolk, where she sang in the church choir, was active in many capacities with the youth and the director of numerous church dramas.

Carol Payne Brinkley WILLIAMSBURG After bravely enduring a five-month long illness with Leukemia, Carol Payne Brinkley, 67, left us to be with her Lord and Savior and returned home to God Thursday evening, Feb. 4, 2021. Throughout her illness, she steadfastly exhibited courage, positivity and a gentle grace, which was typically how she met the challenges of every day she spent with us on this earth. Carol was a native of Connecticut but spent her childhood years growing up in Mount Vernon, New York, and Hillsdale, New Jersey. She graduated from Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale in 1971. Carol attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, and graduated in 1975 with a B.A. Degree in English, and a minor in French. She then spent the next few years living in Germany, where she variously worked as a health spa attendant in Bad Feilnbach and as an au pair in the town of Wolfratshausen, a suburb of Munich.
