Amidon was packed April 6.
One of North Dakotaâs smallest towns had more than 60 people fill the Lebanon Lutheran Church to watch one of their own be honored by the Great Plains Food Bank.
According to officials with the regional food bank that serves North Dakota and parts of Minnesota, it was time to honor Linda Narum as a 2020 Hunger Relief Champion.
âThe coordinator of the Amidon Community Cupboard, Narum has been fighting hunger in southwestern North Dakota for decades, the regional group explained when they announced that she had been named. In addition, to her work managing a wide service area for the Community Cupboard, Linda has found unique ways to serve âthose in need,â the organization explained in a release announcing the award.
MISSION â On a frigid February morning, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation held its twice-monthly food distribution. With sheets of snow blanketing the ground from a recent snowstorm, members of the reservation worked hand-in-hand with distribution drivers from The Wave Foundation, a Portland nonprofit sustainability coalition that helps provide communities like the reservation with healthy and sustainable food options during the pandemic.
Motown and rock ânâ roll oldies emanated from a StreetHopper Bluetooth speaker with an 8-inch woofer. Wave distribution workers, community members and high schoolers from the reservation clad in jackets, gloves, hats and scarves danced through various jobs, trying to stay warm amid brisk winds.
Food box distributions planned for April 20
TRENTON
The Farmers to Families Food Box Program, a component of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s COVID-19 emergency food assistance program, will hold food box distribution events in Hancock County on Tuesday, April 20, at the Acadia Gateway Center on Route 3 in Trenton and at the Bucksport United Methodist Church (3 River Road). Community members may pick up free food boxes on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 10 a.m. in Trenton and 2 p.m. in Bucksport until all boxes have been distributed. No paperwork or registration will be required.
Each box contains a gallon of milk, meat, shredded cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, potatoes and other produce. Those who are able may pick up food boxes for homebound neighbors and family members; per-vehicle box limits will be set according to the number of boxes available at distribution.
The Agriculture Department announced this week that it will soon implement the Dairy Donation Program (DDP) as established in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack noted Wednesday at a House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee hearing that USDA would not continue the Families to Farmers Food Box Program started by the Trump administration but expected to distribute dairy products from the dairy donation program.
“The program will facilitate the timely donation of dairy products to nonprofit organizations who distribute food to persons in need and prevent and minimize food waste,” USDA said in the announcement.
“Because the statute allows retroactive reimbursements of donations made before donation and distribution plans are approved, USDA is providing advance notice of the minimum provisions to be included in the program to encourage the dairy industry to process and donate surplus milk supplies as it moves through the spring
