Republicans on the state’s budget writing committee removed hundreds of Gov. Ever’s proposals as the first day of a weeks-long budget writing process kicked off Thursday.
Voting on party lines, the sixteen-member committee ousted proposals like marijuana legalization, Medicaid expansion, and raising minimum wage.
“These ideas should be debated as part of the legislative process,” Joint Finance Committee co-chair and Republican Senator Howard Marklein said in a press conference before the meeting.
Republicans said they were going back to the baseline, using the most recent biennial budget as their blueprint for the rewrite of the more than $90 billion legislation.

MADISON, Wis. - The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin rose by 667 on Thursday, May 6, for a total of 601,603, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
State health officials reported 14 new deaths Thursday, with a total of 6,877 deaths in the state.
Of the positive cases, 29,668 have required hospitalization (4.9%), while 585,797 have recovered (97.4%), making for 8,663 active cases (1.4%).
More than 2.8 million have tested negative.
More than 3.4 million have been tested.

Kenosha County Public Heath is reporting 15,539 total positive COVID-19 test results in Kenosha County as of Wednesday. That’s 16 more than Tuesday. There have been 304 COVID-19 deaths in Kenosha County. Kenosha County Public Health is reporting 77,597 negative test results.
Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reporting a positive rate of 9,249/100,000 people and a 2.0 percent case fatality rate in Kenosha County as of Wednesday.
In Kenosha County, 38.71 percent of the population has had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccination and 32.17 percent are fully vaccinated as of Wednesday, reports Kenosha County Public Health.
An additional 14
deaths reported statewide Thursday, bringing the total to 6,877, DHS said. Overall, 1.1% of people who have contracted the virus have died.
The seven-day average of positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin remained slightly higher than 600 new cases daily. On Thursday, the figure was 606. The seven-day average of positive cases measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week. An overall decrease in the seven-day average of positive cases indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is also going down, according to DHS.
The number of negative tests in the state was 2,868,723 Thursday, an increase of 4,663.
