Wisconsin DHS: COVID-19 cases up 3,643; deaths up 59

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) on Thursday, Dec. 17 reported 3,543 new, confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state bringing the total number of cases to date to 448,441.
The DHS also reported 4,255 deaths related to COVID-19 in Wisconsin an increase of 59 from Wednesday.
There are five COVID-19 patients at the alternate care facility at Wisconsin State Fair Park as of Thursday.
Among those who have tested positive for COVID-19, 19,785 have required hospitalization (4.4%) and 403,706 have recovered (90.0%). There are 40,378 active cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin (9.0%), according to the DHS.

Mayor Jim Paine may have wanted a unified front in declaring a state of emergency in response to the pandemic.
He did not get it, but a majority of councilors voted in favor of it Tuesday, Dec. 15.
“This is substantially similar to the very first resolution that I proposed to you in March, except the paragraph that I think all of you will have seen by now,” he said. “It’s declaring that we will join other partners at the state and local level in any emergency orders that they issue and lend our enforcement ability to a combined effort to protect the public.”

In the ’70s and ’80s, University of Colorado students would gorge themselves on a banquet of raw meat, red onions and jalapeno peppers as part of an annual Packer Day feast that was held in honor of Alfred G. Packer, a convicted cannibal who ate five of his companions after a snowstorm trapped them in the San Juan mountains in the winter of 1873.
