The county did not publicly disclose its plans for use of the Brannum Lumber site for months after the location had been determined. However, the county gave Racine Mayor Cory Mason and other members of city administration notice as early as July 21, although Mason evidently did not pass the information along to the City Council.
An examination of the timeline indicates city and county did not communicate fully with the public, or with each other.
Correspondingly, The Journal Times did not ask pertinent questions when the purchase of the Taylor Avenue property appeared on county meeting agendas in July â although county notices made no mention of what the Taylor Avenue property would be used for.

University of Wisconsin System Interim President Tommy Thompson says he wants to transform one of the state’s prisons into a college for inmates. Thompson will pitch the “UW System Prison Education Initiative” to the UW Board of Regents on Thursday. Thompson, who oversaw a large expansion of Wisconsin’s prison system when he was governor in the 1990s, told WPR the initiative would also include technical colleges, private colleges, businesses and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

PORTAGE, Wis. Two Columbia Correctional Institution staff members were assaulted Wednesday night by an inmate, according to Wisconsin Department of Corrections officials.
John Beard, director of communications with the DOC, confirmed to News 3 Now that the attack happened around 5 p.m.
The inmate struck both staff members with a closed fist, according to Beard.
Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital, One suffered a large laceration to the forehead that needed medical attention, Beard said.

The state will likely have to extend the deadline once again for closing the youth corrections facilities at Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake.
The youth prisons’ deadline for closing was July 2021, but there is no plan in place for where to put the youth that need to remain in a secured facility after the closure.
Mark Mertens, administrator of Milwaukee County’s Division of Youth and Family Services, said that if the state and county came to an agreement today concerning the funding to build a new facility in Milwaukee, the improvements on the new facility would not be ready before the deadline.
