Secretary of Wisconsin Economic Development Corp Missy Hughes to Headline Newsmaker Lunch Hour

  MILWAUKEE – Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), will be the featured guest at a virtual event set for noon on Tuesday, January 12. This Newsmaker Lunch Hour is presented by a partnership between the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com. Hughes has lead WEDC since October 2019, when she was appointed by Gov. Tony Evers. WEDC leads economic development efforts for the state by providing resources, operational support and financial assistance to companies, partners and communities in Wisconsin.  For example, in 2020, WEDC has provided more than $220 million in assistance to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued its oversight of the state’s incentive contract with Foxconn, among other high profile projects.

State Clears Unemployment Claims Backlog

The state has cleared its backlog of unemployment claims though the feat does not include claims for additional pandemic assistance. “Since the start of the pandemic, our top priority at DWD has been ensuring that all eligible unemployment claims in Wisconsin are paid as quickly as possible,” Pechacek said in a statement. “Today, I am proud to say we have reached our goal to clear the backlog of claims. The tireless work of DWD staff has made it possible for UI to resume its seasonal level of timeliness in January.”

A news release said the new guides note that employers are in a unique position to support workers by creating an open and supportive environment that promotes healthy well-being. The guidelines provide useful resources for employers and employees to contact for additional help. In addition, both sets of guidelines suggest how to identify signs that might require further assistance as well as some strategies for how to practice self-care.

Tony Evers announced today that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) is providing new mental health information for employers and employees managing the added stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us in different ways,” Governor Evers said. “People have been experiencing varying degrees of stress, anxiety, fear, grief and loneliness as part of the pandemic. Although we’re all trying to do our part to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe, it doesn’t make the situation any easier. That’s why we’re providing this information through WEDC to help support folks across our state so we can all get through this together.”
