Stella & Chewy’s, a premium natural pet food company, is expanding its facility in Oak Creek, Wis., officials from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. (WEDC) said in statement. The $67.7 million project is expected to create 245 jobs over the next three years. The WEDC is supporting the project by authorizing up to $2 million in state income tax credits over the next three years, officials said. The actual amount of tax credits Stella & Chewy’s will receive is contingent upon the number of jobs created, officials added. “This investment will enable Stella & Chewy’s to position itself for continued growth and success, and at the same time, create jobs in Milwaukee County,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “Companies have a choice when deciding to expand, and the decision by Stella & Chewy’s to establish another facility in Oak Creek is a testament to Wisconsin’s strong business climate and dedicated workforce.”

Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn in the global market, made the statement after Daniel Hintz and Hintz Real Estate Development in Wisconsin dismissed a lawsuit they had brought against the company, alleging a breach of contract with two municipalities in the state. The lawsuit, filed by Caledonia resident Daniel Hintz and Hintz Real Estate Development Co., alleged that Hon Hai had failed to construct a 10.5th generation flat panel plant in Wisconsin and employ manufacturing and construction workers as it had promised.

Interim Wisconsin Department of Health Services secretary Karen Timberlake said the role of employers varies, but could include allowing employees to take off work to get vaccinated, hosting on-site vaccine clinics or simply sharing information about vaccine safety with employees. In a recent survey of small employers in the state, nearly a third (32%) said they don’t think they have a role to play in helping their employees get the COVID-19 vaccine, which Timberlake said was an “alarming” number.

(Komatsu Mining Co. via YouTube) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently distributed grants to support infrastructure improvements near two manufacturing facilities in the Milwaukee area. WisDOT issued two Transportation Economic Assistance (TEA) grants totaling about $1.7 million to support Komatsu Mining Corp.’s new manufacturing facility and headquarters in Milwaukee’s Harbor District. Bordering Lake Michigan, the Harbor District provides access to the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers. The agency also issued a TEA grant of $250,000 for road construction work at a new Milwaukee Tool facility in West Bend, which is 40 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
