VICKI: THE HOMELESS COALITION OF SOUTHERN INDIANA HAS MOVED ITS EMERGENCY SHELTER TO A LOCAL HOTEL INSTEAD OF USING A CHURCH IN JEFFERSONVILLE, THE COALITION HAS 30 ROOMS IN THE FOURTH FLOOR OF THE HAMPTON INN IN NEW ALBANY. WHITE FLAG IS CALLED WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO FALL TO 35 DEGREES OR BELOW FOR AT LEAST FOUR HOURS OVERNIGHT. FIRST WHITE FLAG NIGHT WAS CALLED IN NOVEMBER. THE COALITION QUICKLY REALIZED AS MORE PEOPLE CAME IN, THERE WAS A BIGGER CHANCE OF SPREADING COVID-19. WE REALLY DECIDED THAT WE NEEDED TO LOOK INTO A HOTEL MODEL FOR TO HELP KIND OF MITIGATE THE SPREAD OF COVID BECAUSE WE VE GOT PEOPLE COMING TO ONE SPACE, IT MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY HAVE CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER ON A REGULAR DAY. Southern Indiana homeless coalition transitions to hotel mode for white flag emergency shelters

NEW ALBANY, Ind. Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing Saturday night and area emergency shelters will raise the white flag.
The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana is sponsoring the shelters during inclement weather for anyone in the community in need of a warm place to sleep and some hot meals.
For nearly five years, they have been giving people a warm and safe place to stay, when temperatures drop below freezing. Now in the midst of a pandemic, they are changing how they are helping people in this community.
Groups do what they can to keep Southern Indiana homeless warm
