Feeling left out: Republican leaders react to first meeting with Pritzker, Democratic leaders

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The top legislative leaders in Illinois held their first in-person meeting of the year in Gov. JB Pritzker’s office Wednesday afternoon. Republican leaders hoped to hear about Pritzker’s plans for the redistricting process. However, the meeting was relatively short. Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie said he asked the governor, Senate President Don Harmon, and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch what areas they had interest in working on a bipartisan basis. “The only thing that was brought up was their apparent ethics proposal,” McConchie told reporters. “There was nothing else of the sort that was really brought up. I was disappointed. This is something with the governor and legislative leaders have talked about a new time and new days really in Springfield. Unfortunately, it seems that at the end of the day, what they’re interested is really not Republican input but in simply moving on with their own agenda.”

Ill. Gov. signs expansive healthcare access, equity proposal Associated Press Print Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation Tuesday to make healthcare more accessible and equitable, particularly for people of color. The wide-ranging law includes provisions reducing sales taxes to 1% on blood-sugar test kits and prioritizing state funding for Illinois communities with high rates of violence. It s the last of four pillars for racial justice authored by the Legislative Black Caucus that the Democratic governor has signed into law. Republicans swiftly criticized Pritzker for endorsing programs they said will cost billions of dollars while the state remains deeply in debt.

Capitol Fax com - Your Illinois News Radar » Pritzker mischaracterizes his own 2018 remap veto pledge, also claims 2011 remap had a very strong leaning toward fairness

Tuesday, Apr 27, 2021 Let’s once again go back to March 5, 2018 and my question to all gubernatorial candidates… Will you pledge as governor to veto any state legislative redistricting map proposal that is in any way drafted or created by legislators, political party leaders and/or their staffs or allies? The exception, of course, would be the final official draft by LRB. JB Pritzker’s response… Yes, I will pledge to veto. We should amend the constitution to create an independent commission to draw legislative maps, but in the meantime, I would urge Democrats and Republicans to agree to an independent commission to handle creating a new legislative map. That designated body should reflect the gender, racial, and geographic diversity of the state and look to preserve the Voting Rights Act decisions to ensure racial and language minorities are fully represented in the electoral process.
