Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is among the Republicans that have or still are drawing the ire of former President Donald Trump including his allies in Congress. This week, Cheney was voted out of her leadership position by her caucus.
Cheney was ousted from her position as the Republican Conference Chair this week through a voice vote, according to people familiar with the matter. The vote puts an end to the months of backlash against the Wyoming lawmaker over her criticism of Trump, especially after the January 6 insurrection. Cheney was among the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the now-former president.

Republicans voted Wednesday to remove U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney from her leadership position after her continued pushback against former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud in the presidential election. Saying they want to unite the party in an attempt to win back the House in the 2022 midterm elections, GOP lawmakers in a closed door meeting removed Cheney (R-Wyo.) in a voice vote. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) introduced a resolution to strip Cheney of her post as conference chair, the No. 3 leadership job. In prepared remarks, Foxx said that the party had lost its confidence in Cheney, the third-term daughter of a former vice president. Cheney serves as Wyoming’s lone member in the House.

After years of encouraging Democrats and voters to take a meritocratic approach when evaluating candidates for office, Republicans are coming under fire for insisting that ousted House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney must be replaced by another woman.
Before the Wyoming congresswoman was booted from her leadership post in a vote on Wednesday, House Republicans had sent out clear signals that her successor would need to be a woman. Male members who had reportedly been interested in the role, such as Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks of Indiana, were quickly dismissed as the names of three women Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York, Ann Wagner of Missouri and Jackie Walorksi of Indiana were circulated inside the conference.
