Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, defended embattled House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney on Wednesday amid growing calls among prominent Republicans for the Wyoming lawmaker’s ouster from the leadership post.
Cheney drew the ire of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and others in recent weeks amid repeated clashes with former President Donald Trump. Ernst, the only other Republican woman in an elected leadership position, noted that she disagreed with Cheney’s vocal criticism of Trump but defended her colleague s right to express her opinion.
It was another political time and another political place a few years ago.
House Republicans had just elected Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., as the House GOP Conference chairwoman. Cheney would be the highest-ranking Republican female in the House.
A smiling Cheney appeared alongside other top Republicans at a November 2018 press conference in the marble, acoustically-challenged foyer of the Longworth House Office Building.
Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, held the same slot as conference chairman when he was a congressman from Wyoming in the 1980s.
I asked Cheney at that press conference if her dad gave her any advice.

Liz Cheney’s days as House GOP conference chairman are numbered. Her support among the party leadership has evaporated after her headline-grabbing statements about the Republican take on the 2020 election being “The Big Lie.”
Many pro-Trump Republicans wanted her to walk the plank after her vote to impeach the former president. But Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy stood by her, probably realizing the dire position the party was in after the January 6 riot and not wanting to shed any blood while the party was reeling from the massive media assault.
But now, McCarthy appears to have had enough. Many top Republicans have requested that Cheney get off her anti-Trump platform and promote issues that unify the party. But Cheney refused.

According to House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), the special election in Texas confirms America is rejecting socialism. During an interview Monday, the representative said Americans are responding well to Republican congressional candidates.
This comes after residents of Texas’ Sixth District voted favorably for GOP candidate Susan Wright over the weekend to fill her late husband’s seat on the House. Additionally, Republicans flipped 10 House seats in 2020, in turn, shrinking Democrats’ control of the lower chamber.
