Some Democrats seethed privately.
They heard the remarks of House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif. Waters pushed demonstrators to be confrontational if the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial didn’t go the way she wanted.
Waters’ comments threatened to unspool the very tightly wound Democratic coalition of moderates and progressives.
Some rank-and-file Democrats found Waters remarks revolting.
That disgust metastasized further after Hennepin, MN County Judge Peter Cahill criticized Waters from the bench on Monday, describing her comments as disrespectful to the rule of law. Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned, opined Cahill to Chauvin’s defense counsel.

When it comes to the Best Actor race at this year s Oscars, a posthumous win for Chadwick Boseman has seemed all but guaranteed for months. But could a massive upset actually be in the cards?
Boseman has long been considered the Best Actor frontrunner for his performance in
Ma Rainey s Black Bottom, the final film he completed prior to his death, and the late actor has already won at the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
But also in the mix is Anthony Hopkins, whose performance in
The Father was hailed as one of the best of his career, and Hopkins recently won over Boseman in an upset at the British Academy Film Awards. Pundits generally chalked that up to the BAFTAs, the British equivalent of the Oscars, simply favoring a celebrated British actor, and most experts are still predicting Boseman will win the Academy Award.
The resolution came amid a backlash mounting over Ms. Waters’ call on Saturday for protesters in Minnesota to “get more confrontational” unless Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of murder in the May 25 death of George Floyd.
“Every single House Democrat just voted to stand with Maxine Waters,” tweeted House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, Louisiana Republican. “They made it clear: Democrats are fine with Democrat politicians inciting violence and chaos.”
Chauvin, 45, was found guilty Tuesday on all three counts unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after a 14-day trial in Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis.
