Investigators on the House’s January 6 select committee, vowing a deep dive into the attack on the US Capitol, may soon be confronted with a grim reality: A battle over subpoena requests and the prospect they could end up in protracted legal fights.
Both Democrats and Republicans on the select committee say they want to obtain all the communications at the White House and conversations with Donald Trump that occurred surrounding January 6, but there’s an expectation they won’t get much cooperation from the former President, his former White House aides and his allies in Congress who have blasted the investigation.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of just two Republicans on the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, said Wednesday that “a lot” of GOP lawmakers have privately conveyed support to him, as he stressed that “nobody actually believes” the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.
“There’s a lot of people, you know. They come up and say it,” Kinzinger told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” of his Republican colleagues privately signaling support. “It’s not any of the ones that go on TV and spout the ‘Big Lie,’ and then say it. It’s the ones that are staying more quiet that I think appreciate the stand. But it’s a lot.”
Striking testimony
My heart went out to the Capitol Police officers who testified (under oath, I might add) about the attempted coup on Jan. 6 at the Capitol. Everything they said verified the videos weâve seen of the violence and hatred unleashed against them by Trump supporters (âPolice tell Jan. 6 stories,â July 29).
And the aftermath â most striking was the testimony of Officer Michael Fanone of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department: âWhat makes the struggle harder and more painful, is to know so many of . the people I put my life at risk to defend are downplaying or outright denying what happened. I went to hell and back to protect them . but too many are now telling me that hell doesnât exist or that hell actually wasnât that bad.
Pelosi: To say not wearing a mask is based on science is not wise
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi addressed her comment where she called Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy a moron after hearing that McCarthy said that masks are against science.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy a moron after being asked by a reporter about his criticism of the Capitol physician s mask mandate in the House, another sign of the souring relationship between the two House party leaders. He s such a moron, Pelosi, a California Democrat, said while getting into her SUV outside the Capitol, when asked about the House minority leader.
Republican lawmakers repeatedly tried to adjourn the House of Representatives on Wednesday, preferring to head home rather than comply with new coronavirus safety measures.
On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that masks will be once again be required in the Hall of the House, for all members and staff, except while members are recognized to speak.
The change came due to an order from Dr. Brian Monahan, Congress attending physician, deeming masks necessary to keep members and their employees safe.
It followed new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on Tuesday warning that the delta variant can be caught and transmitted by some fully vaccinated people and urging some face mask use in indoor public places, even among those who have been inoculated.
