House Speaker calls for actions vs plastic pollution

In his Earth Day statement, House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco stressed the “compelling need” for “direct and tangible” solutions to plastic pollution in the country, such as imposing a ban on harmful and unnecessary single-use plastic products. We are racing against time to save our planet,” Velasco said. Citing a report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Marinduque representative that over 300 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year, with at least eight million tons ending up in oceans and threatening marine animals as well as humans.

(MANILA BULLETIN FILE) Velasco said he was looking to the local pharmaceutical industry to boost the country’s response against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic given the lack of vaccines and medicines needed to address the crisis. “While we understand the need for thorough study of drugs and medicines, we need to balance it out by making compliance easier for local pharmaceutical firms by cutting out unnecessary red tape and redundant requirements,” Velasco said.  “There are countless reports of local drug manufacturers whose products have been stuck in regulatory limbo for years. These bureaucratic impediments are something that we need to eliminate, especially during a public health crisis,” he lamented.

Solons want probe into DOH, FDA policies on registration, use of COVID-19 drugs

By ANNA FELICIA BAJO, GMA News Published April 15, 2021 5:33pm House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and Deputy Speaker Bernadette Herrera-Dy have filed a resolution seeking an inquiry into the policies of the Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration on the registration, utilization and manufacture and distribution of drugs for COVID-19. Through House Resolution 1711, the two lawmakers urged the Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability to conduct an inquiry on the matter as well as the policies and guidelines of both agencies, which appear to be detrimental to public interest amid the pandemic. The resolution specifically mentioned FDA Circular No. 2020-12 or the Guidelines for the Registration of Drug Products under Emergency Use for the Coronavirus Disease 2019.
