Malta’s Commander of the Armed Forces has issued what he describes as a “right of reply” following revelations that a staff sergeant was in a romantic relationship with a drug kingpin. Still, he has failed to reply to direct questions as to whether he was ever made aware of the relationship.
Lovin Malta revealed that Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi was aware of the relationship between criminal Raymond Caruana and Sgt. Carmen Pace, who was present at Caruana’s home when he was murdered in March 2015.
Pace, who had been fired from Malta’s Security Service in 2011 over a serious misdemeanour and reinstated to the army soon after, was never reprimanded for her relationship with one of Malta’s top criminals. Rather, she was promoted months after Caruana’s murder.
The Civil Protection Department has been equipped with five new fire trucks.
The Hawker vehicles, which cost €1.5 million, were inaugurated by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri on Friday.
He said the new vehicles should help the department in its day-to-day work and challenges. These include driving through narrow roads and lanes which are typical of certain towns and villages in Malta and Gozo.

CPD director-general Emanuel Psaila said the vehicles were the first of their kind in Europe and would be making a big difference in people’s lives. They will enable civil protection officers to do their work more effectively while being better protected, he said.

BirdLife Malta wants government to prohibit hunters from being accompanied by minors while hunting.
In a letter to the Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà and Commissioner for Children Pauline Miceli, the environmental NGO said that such legislation would help to avoid incidents.
