Lawmakers press Biden administration for details on Afghan evacuation Follow Us
Question of the Day By Joseph Clark - The Washington Times - Friday, July 2, 2021
Lawmakers are growing frustrated with the Biden administration’s silence on key details about the proposed evacuation for Afghan interpreters and others whose lives will be in jeopardy after U.S. troops leave the war-torn country at the end of the summer.
The administration’s turnover of the Bagram Airfield to Afghan security forces Friday marked a significant escalation in the withdrawal and signaled a complete drawdown well in advance of President Biden’s Sept. 11 deadline. The move comes amid increased warnings about a dire future for Afghanistan soon after troops leave, and few lawmakers are confident the administration has a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety of those who face Taliban retribution for providing support
Egypt: Exhausting all peaceful means to settle dispute
Egypt has so far played the Nile Dam dispute with Ethiopia straight by the diplomatic book, seeking a solution via mediated negotiation, working with and through trusted partners and institutions such as the United States, the World Bank and the African Union.
Egypt depends on the Nile, which originates in Ethiopia, for more than 90% of its water needs. Ethiopia’s decision to proceed with the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) this month, without an agreement on management of the downstream flow of the Nile waters, could reduce the flow of water to both Egypt and Sudan.
The Biden administration asked three Central Asian nations to temporarily house thousands of Afghans who worked with American forces and could be targeted by the Taliban as U.S. and NATO troops withdraw after nearly two decades.
The U.S. has asked Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to take in about 9,000 Afghans who assisted with the American militaryâs invasion and occupation of the country, according to three people familiar with the request, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.
The handover to Afghan forces raises the potential threats facing the many Afghan translators, drivers and other workers and their families who helped sustain the American presence after the U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban government following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. The Biden administration pledged to expedite immigration visas for Afghans who worked closely with U.S. forces, but that process is still in flux.

Omar said her Jewish House Democratic counterparts were not partners in justice Credit: Reuters I think it’s really important for these members to realize that they haven’t been partners in justice. They haven’t been, you know, equally engaging in seeking justice around the world, Omar told CNN s Jake Tapper.
Tapper had asked Omar about her comparison and other comments Omar had made in the past regarding Israel, asking: Do you understand why some of your fellow House Democrats, especially Jews, find that language anti-Semitic?
In a February 2019 tweet, Omar said the US-Israel alliance is all about the Benjamins and she claimed in 2012 that Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.
