PROVIDENCE With positivity rates trending lower and the number of residents who have been vaccinated continuing to rise, albeit incrementally now, Rhode Island is on track to make COVID-19 a “manageable disease” before summer’s end, Thomas McCarthy, director of the state Health Department’s COVID-19 unit, said on Thursday.
“We know we can do this before the fall,” McCarthy said during Gov. Dan McKee’s weekly coronavirus briefing at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
McCarthy offered influenza as an example of a manageable disease. The flu annually sends some people to hospitals and small numbers die, but with a large percentage of the population receiving an annual shot, the overall toll is moderated. Many public-health experts believe that booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer eventually will be recommended.
