RI to reopen fully on Friday, McKee says

Declaring that tomorrow is the tomorrow Rhode Islanders have been waiting for for a long time, Gov. Dan McKee confirmed that the state would fully reopen on Friday, with capacity restrictions lifted on nearly all businesses.  McKee made the announcement during the final coronavirus news conference that will take place at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence.  During the first news conference at the Vets, on May 11, 2020, the state was just starting to emerge from lockdown, and Gov. Gina Raimondo announced that shuttered Rhode Island restaurants would be able to reopen for limited outdoor dining only.  McKee also announced that Rhode Island will be sending 200,000 coronavirus test kits to support relief efforts in India.

Hope that COVID will be manageable disease by summer s end

PROVIDENCE With positivity rates trending lower and the number of residents who have been vaccinated continuing to rise, albeit incrementally now, Rhode Island is on track to make COVID-19 a “manageable disease” before summer’s end, Thomas McCarthy, director of the state Health Department’s COVID-19 unit, said on Thursday. “We know we can do this before the fall,” McCarthy said during Gov. Dan McKee’s weekly coronavirus briefing at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. McCarthy offered influenza as an example of a manageable disease. The flu annually sends some people to hospitals and small numbers die, but with a large percentage of the population receiving an annual shot, the overall toll is moderated. Many public-health experts believe that booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer eventually will be recommended.
