Marshall County Records 55th COVID Death | News, Sports, Jobs

From STAFF REPORTS The Marshall County Health Department reported another COVID-related death Friday evening, the 55th such death in the county since the pandemic began. According to the department, the latest death was of a 72-year-old man hospitalized at the time of his passing. The department also reported 38 more confirmed positive cases and six new probable cases. That puts Marshall County’s totals at 1,998 confirmed cases, 493 probable cases, eight hospitalizations and 55 associated deaths. The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department announced 33 new positive COVID cases Friday night, bringing that county’s totals to 3,176 cases and 57 related deaths. In Ohio, Belmont County has had 4,428 positive cases since the pandemic began, with 840 people in isolation with active cases, 3,471 recoveries, and 32 people have been hospitalized. Jim Justice announcing that the age range for COVID-19 vaccinations will drop to 70, effective Wednesday. They welcomed the opportunity to continue vaccinating new groups as long as the vaccine doses kept coming. Marshall County Threat Preparedness Director Mark Ackermann said the department was happy to get to work vaccinating a new range of clients. Ackermann said that even before the announcement was made Wednesday morning, the Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel county health departments had been scheduled for a phone conference to become a new regional clinic. “We’re told that we should be becoming one of these clinic sites, they’re doing regionally. We’ve already got a planning meeting scheduled for (today),” Ackermann said. “We’re looking forward to it. Our 80-year-old clinics that we’ve done have gone very well, they were very eager.”

From STAFF REPORTS The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported two more deaths related to COVID-19 in its Tuesday night update. Both people who died were hospitalized at the time of their passing, the report stated. The county also announced 22 new positive cases. That brings Ohio County’s totals to 3,075 cases and 54 deaths. The Marshall County Health Department reported 17 new confirmed positive COVID cases, along with seven new probable cases. That brings that county’s totals to 1,938 confirmed cases, 474 probable cases, 11 hospitalizations and 53 associated deaths. All four Northern Panhandle counties remained in “red,” the highest-risk category, on Tuesday’s COVID-19 alert map from the Department of Health and Human Resources. From Staff Reports COVID-19 cases continued to climb locally Thursday as every county in West Virginia continued to exist in the two highest-risk categories on the state’s daily COVID alert map. The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported 52 new positive COVID cases in its Thursday night update. That brings the county’s totals to 2,930 positive cases and 50 related deaths since the pandemic began. The Marshall County Health Department reported 14 new positive COVID cases and 14 new probable cases in its Thursday night update. That brings the county’s totals to 1,858 confirmed cases, 427 probable cases, two hospitalizations and 53 associated deaths. All four Northern Panhandle counties were in “red,” the highest-risk category on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Thursday COVID-19 alert map. Forty-five of West Virginia’s 55 counties were “red” on the DHHR map.

WHEELING A steady stream of locals age 80 and older came to the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department throughout Wednesday, receiving their doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. While clinics are scheduled to be held through next Thursday, Health Administrator Howard Gamble said Wednesday’s clinic had been progressing smoothly, with fewer than 10 people lingering in the halls of the City-County Building at any one time between appointments. “Pretty busy, a bit of a different population, but it’s the same getting individuals in, getting them registered, getting them vaccinated,” Gamble said. “Today went well, still going.”
