That death marked the 87th in Ohio County since the pandemic began. The department also reported 17 new COVID-19 cases between Saturday and Sunday. That brought the county’s total to 4,341 cases since the pandemic began.

Those circumstances weren’t enough to persuade Finchem, who is in his early 60s, to get a Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Finchem remains skeptical, he said, because he distrusts the federal government and top public health officials, he’s heard mixed messages about the vaccines on social media and television news, and he worries about long-term side effects.

Jim Justice is getting the state parks system involved in the project to get more people vaccinated against COVID-19. Justice announced during his Friday briefing that free vaccination clinics are coming to all West Virginia state parks. The state will start with its highest-traffic parks before Memorial Day. The first parks on the list will be Chief Logan, Pipestem, Little Beaver, Cedar Creek, Cooper’s Rock, Kanawha State Park, Greenbrier State Park, Tygart Lake, Berkeley Springs and Tu-Endie-Wei.

From Staff Reports The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported a new COVID-19-related death for the second straight night Thursday. That brought the county’s total to 86 related deaths since the pandemic began. The department also announced 13 new positive COVID cases in its Thursday night update, bringing that total to 4,313. WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital will cut back on the hours of its off-site COVID testing center starting Monday. From that point, the center’s hours will be 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday. This Saturday will be the last Saturday the center is open for testing. The drive-through center is located at the former Harmony House, next to Valley Professional Center South at the old OVMC. To reach the site, those being tested will drive up 22nd Street to behind the old Valley Professional Center South, turn left at the top of the hill and follow the signs.

The sample was isolated from a patient in the U.S. (NIAID-RML via AP) The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported one new COVID-19-related death in Ohio County in its Wednesday night update. That marked the 85th such death in the county since the pandemic began. The department also announced eight new positive COVID cases in the county as of Wednesday night, pushing that total to 4,300. Two of those cases are what is commonly known as the UK Variant of the virus. There have been 30 cases of the UK Variant, a more communicable version of the virus, found in Ohio County as of Wednesday.
